So what are they? I will list the major changes, as I see them, below.

Microsoft will provide the results for both paid and organic results for both engines.

The results will be delivered to the respective sites and look like they are still separate but the results as the alliance is fully implemented will all come from Microsoft.

How will that effect SEO?

The big one will be that anyone who has good listings in Yahoo's organic results will see a drop if they are not equally well ranked in Microsoft. Obviously, the reverse is true of people whose sites are ranking well in Microsoft.

So the Alliance is suggesting people start doing prep work for the change and concentrating on improving the rankings in Microsoft/Bing.

How this will effect people's purchasing of listings in Yahoo Directory over the next year should be worth watching. But, they are suggesting offsetting drops by buying more PPC!

What changes are being made in PPC?

Microsoft PPC ads will populate both engines eventually and the Alliance is pushing accounts at Yahoo to move over to adCenter. But what will this do for the early movers?

First, adCenter will not allow you to differentiate between Yahoo and Microsoft paid ads. But if you wait as long as you can then you will still be able to separate the two engines' results. Some of us get better conversions from Yahoo and if you convert over to adCenter early your ads will be shown across both engines and could lower conversion rates.

Second, domain blocking will no longer be available for Sponsored Search when you leave Yahoo, though the Alliance is saying it will have this feature soon. Both sites have a limit of 500 domains at the moment so that will not change, but the blocking in adCenter is for search partners listings and not those for the two sites own results.

Third, adCenter will have the same match types as Google - exact, phrase and broad - something people have always asked Yahoo to adopt. Matching will be at the keyword level and bidding for each can be set at the ad group level.

Fourth, campaign targeting will see changes. Apart from slightly different location changes - zip codes will not be immediately available in adCenter - the ability to change bids by demographics will have a major change as seen in the image below.

Fifth, more excluded keywords will be allowed in adCenter - though exactly when has not been announced.

Sixth, the number of characters of an ad will decrease in adCenter. The 25 character headline and 70 character body copy will be used. This may be one of the biggest changes PPC people will need to work on for the transition. If this is not changed the ads will be truncated and transitioned as inactive.

Seventh, plurals and common misspellings are treated as separate words in adCenter contrary to the canonicalization done by Yahoo PPC.

Eighth, bidding minimums will jump under adCenter. Yahoo had a low of 1 cent whereas Microsoft has a low bid of 5 cents.

Ninth, budgeting will be slightly different. Yahoo has a daily limit that can be set at the account and campaign level. adCenter offers a monthly limit at the campaign level and an optional daily limit that will not be a hard stop.

Tenth, rich ads in search will not be immediately available in adCenter as they are currently in Yahoo.

The timeline for these changes are not absolute but the Alliance does offer some general information in the chart below.

AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-58581792524591212012010-05-01T14:14:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.343-07:00Someone Hacked My Gmail Account
Seems my willingness to log on to any free wifi finally caught up with me. The site uses a combination of on site actions and GeoIP recognition to find all the specials and rebates being offered by manufacturers and car dealerships and any available vehicles that apply to them.

This type of site and others that are creating unique and specific information are getting a huge lift from referrals from social networks.

The habit of jumping to Google or any of the search engines is being lessened by this synergy of social communication and specialized sites. Real time search seems to be a tag that some of this is being given, but in reality the web is just catching up with what we as social animals have been doing since tribes existed.

Google's placing of the latest mentions of a search term in to their results may be considered real time search, but when the twitter comments are part of the mix it really isn't filtered well for relevancy unless you were looking for what is being commented on at the moment for those keywords.

Most Twitter apps have a search function that pulls that information and one would tend to use that as opposed to going over to Google.

The impact of Twitter on search is like a conversation where someone will ask the people involved if they know X - if no one does you will usually see someone grab a smart phone and start doing a search, but before that the answer can come from the group. That answer will be given more weight than any that be be found through a search engine if the group places faith in source.

Social media is creating an environment similar to our preWeb days when everyone had those people we contacted for various types of answers - this is ingrained in our human nature and the social media is helping. Maybe prior to the mass communication tools Google had become one of those sources - we were willing to give up the preferred human reference points for the quickness and ease of responses. But with the presence of social media maybe we are reverting back.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-67592174403721152592010-03-20T02:30:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.349-07:00Google Sending Mix Messages, Offering Analytics Opt OutWill the new Google Analtics opt out have a huge impact on the ability to fully track conversions? Absolutely. Does the Google Ad Preference option show a future of personally interactive and personalized ads or one that Google as the host of all these wonders will be the only ones that have the data?

Sure Google claims it deletes accumulated personalized data but with the volume of predictable actions garnered from accumulated behavioral information do they really need the individual data.

Seems Google is really saying allow us to block everyone else's chance to learn from their traffic, it will be our little secret.

Are they pushing people back to the non analytics days? When blanket adwords buys were done without the benefit of tracking conversion, why would they want such a thing?

Could they be getting ready to launch a new form of advertising, or another product like caller id creating blocking?

The Official Google Blog when discussing the future of display advertising states:

"image, text, video and rich-media formats — on most of the websites that you visit. These ads are crucial to the Internet. They provide information about thousands of products, services and businesses. They help to fund the web content and services that we all use. And they enable large and small advertisers to reach new customers, increase sales and grow their businesses."

Google plans "unveiling new features to improve display advertising for users, advertisers and online publishers alike."

But if analytics can be countered is the average advertiser likely to get faulty information of the ROI for ads? Or is Google giving a back door opportunity to the analytics companies whose pixels cannot be turned off by the Google opt out?

Could Google be trying to get other analytics firms to help with the development of new innovations for the space? Could some former Google Analytics employee have a start up Google is eying?

Google Watch's Clint Boulton calls "the notion that the search engine's tendrils are seeping into every aspect of the Internet realm, from broadband networks (no, really) to social networks (Buzz), to niche Web services such as annotations to ambitious forays into mobile platforms (Android)," Google Creep. Thanks for finding the Hungry Beast video, Clint, I miss the Australian humor.

It's scary but true. Hiding behind the Google logo cannot stop people from wondering why they are shooting their own system - GA - because turning off analyics means others will gather more accurate information and become a financially viable alternative. Or could the view through conversion technology be the new way to track everything.

"By using View-through conversion reporting, you can more easily compare the performance of your Google Content Network campaign with the performance of your other display advertising campaigns. This feature can also help you determine the best ways and places to advertise, how best to optimize your display ad campaigns, and, ultimately, how to spend your advertising dollars more effectively," Google explains.

How can they offer this while also the ability yo opt out? They must be storing enough http-referrer info to track without the feedback of the tracking code?

"Here is an example of how View-through conversion reporting works: Let's say you're selling pet food online and you're measuring conversions on your site's email newsletter sign-up and your shopping cart "Thank You" pages. If a user sees your display ad, does not click on it but then visits your site within the next 30 days to sign-up to receive your email newsletter and to purchase a couple dozen cans of organic cat food, you'll see two View-through conversions reported on your Campaigns tab in AdWords".

The messages are mixed and really need to be clarified. How does opt out impact accuracy of analytics? How does this view through technology work when opt out is enabled? Will opt out decrease the ability to see some conversion sources? Does opt out effect any other tracking collecting data? Why decrease information gathering? Is Google expecting the FCC to regulate the opt out ability and just starting early to get in front of the curve? I am sure this will be discussed at SES NY this coming week.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-83321609394469786622010-03-08T22:25:00.000-08:002010-07-25T08:50:01.351-07:00RipOff Report Now Selling Links, Verifying Safe Cash4GoldYou have got to be kidding me right. Google still loves Ripoff Report and it seems they can do no wrong. They are selling links and verifying Cash4Gold stating:

"Ripoff Report has recently added Cash4Gold Company to its exclusive list of businesses who have qualified for "Verified" status. As a member, cash4gold has been shown to have a successful track record of customer satisfaction regarding its products and services.

Other online complaint sites have quite a few reports against Cash4Gold - guess Ripoff Report does not take them anymore because the list when doing a search for Cash4Gold on the Ripoff Report site - actually it has an extensive red letter list of reports saying they are good.

These guys need to be taken out of the search results. Come on Google - Yahoo and Microsoft do not give them the authority you have bestowed on them. Did Ed Mangedson make a large investment during the venture capital days?

Hey Matt - they even give opinions on search engine behavior cockily stating their reports have a way of finding their way back to the top results.

Paying to join their Consumer Advocacy Program "is the best way to manage and repair your business reputation. Hiding negative complaints is only a Band-Aid. Consumers want to see how a business took care of business".

"WARNING! Businesses who hire SEO companies to try and hide complaints, it does not work most of the time, and you have to keep paying them forever, and if it works consumers will still find the report even if it is on page 2, 3 or page 10. Search engines don’t like this kind of SEO!. Ask your SEO company to tell you what damage it does to your business with the search engines once SEO work is performed to try and move negative listings down!"

I wonder when they will be offering classes on how to do your own SEO. They know how to get their reports that they want people to pay when they pass the CAP. Just link other pages to them.

Come on Matt it really is time. AND they are link selling.

<img src="http://www.smart-keywords.com/images/rippoff%20reports%20link%20selling.gif" width=400" height="500"/>

Ripoff Report is a blight in the search results and really needs to be removed.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-13602366561201444522010-01-04T11:08:00.000-08:002010-07-25T08:50:01.353-07:00Is The Google Privacy Issue Al Gore's Next Crusade?Despite the fact that Google is an active content provider on Al Gore's Current TV, it seems some of the staff have problems with Google privacy issues if the video below is any indication.

Maybe the Nobel Peace Prize winner sees the privacy challenge as more important than the income Google provides Current TV and helps it stay broadcasting.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-74574173351520667812009-12-31T01:09:00.000-08:002010-07-25T08:50:01.355-07:00Twitter Carrying On Woodstock Spirit 40 Years LaterI watched the movie "Taking Woodstock" last night and thought that 40 years later Twitter may be the techno age equivalent of the 60s music festival. In the 1960s music was the communal force of its generation and Woodstock represented the ultimate platform for the expression of its time. Three days of peace and music was the tag line for the event that epitomized a generation.

The festival met with a lot of obstacles from the conservative powers that be in the beginning but by the end of the event had won many over. The musical "come ins" of the 60s were venues where the youth of the United States and much of the rest of the world could gather to meet, make friends and discuss the issues of the day. Many of the conversations were aimless and trivial, but had relevance to those holding them, much like many Twits. But amid the babble there are many important discussions occurring.

The decade that ends today has been one dominated by the internet and all things electronic. Music still holds an important place but it is social media that has become the place where we gather to hold our "come ins" - though they are called "tweetups" (one of the Oxford English Dictionary's words of the year).

The gathering of war and social protesters at the music events of the 60s is reflected in the use of Twitter as a gathering place for this passing decade's voices of protest and new thoughts.

While there may not be as many popular songs of protest that were around back then, there are social platforms that allow everyone to have their voices heard in ripples throughout the "global village".

More than MySpace which can be thought of as the first truly online global village or Facebook, the largest global social network, Twitter has become our social communication tool. The teenagers, who once looked at Twitter as something for older people, are fast coming around and "the older" crowd, who never used MySpace and rarely played with Facebook, have started to embrace the application.

Like Woodstock that just happened at the right time for the explosion of people who attended or tried to get there and made the event a nexus of a generation, Twitter can attribute some of its massive adoption to the growth of mobile devices and the apps that allow access to their application.

Neither Woodstock nor Twitter made money at first. The concert needed the movie rights and merchandising to see a profit after the event, but the organizers fought to hold it. Twitter obviously has yet to see a profit for their efforts, but they see its importance and future potential.

The lyrics of the Joni Mitchell song ring true of the potential of Twitter as a platform for social change. "I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes/ Riding shotgun in the sky,/ Turning into butterflies/ Above our nation" could be an echo of the sentiment of the Iranian protesters using Twitter to voice their desire for change in their country.

"I feel myself a cog in somethin' turning./And maybe it's the time of year,/ Yes and maybe it's the time of man./ And ... life is for learning".AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-23293365462014814222009-11-15T13:25:00.000-08:002010-07-25T08:50:01.358-07:00Google Antitrust PossibilitiesThe lawyers and executives over at Google must be very aware of the antitrust problems they face, but then again I am sure that the people at AT&T were similarly aware before they were forced to break up the company. If they need any insights perhaps they can go through Google Books and find Ray G. Besing's book "Who Broke Up AT&T".

Google is not helping themselves with recent moves, like the purchase of AdMob announced this week and their intention of providing free GPS software.

The question is has Google gotten so big that growth activity has swamped their executives and they are too busy to think about the possibility of serious antitrust problems. Or are they just too confident that it will not happen to them. Has success blinded them?

AT&T's biggest factor in being broken up was "was using monopoly profits from its Western Electric subsidiary to subsidize the costs of its network, which was contrary to U.S. antitrust law," as Wikipedia notes.

Obviously Google is using profits from other areas to provide free services to internet users and website owners. Google Analytics is a good example, and would be interesting if someone remaining in the space were to challenge them.

Interestingly, AT&T is pushing the FCC to look in to Google's activities with their new Voice product. Meanwhile, the EU has been investigating Google Books and recently added a complaint from Italian newspaper publishers who claim they are being removed from regular search results because they decided not to be included in Google News.

In the US, the actions of AdWords creating minimum bids and use of Quality Scores etc. to justify huge increases in the cost per click for keywords has been voiced by many in the space, but a suit by TradeComet may add to the momentum of antitrust actions against Google. TradeComet had been buying clicks from hundreds of thousands of keywords to drive traffic to their SourceTool site, but "the complaint states, Google raised the price SourceTool had to pay for many keywords 100-fold (from 10¢ a word, for example, to $10). In a short time, TradeComet alleges, SourceTool lost 90% of its monthly traffic from Google and millions of dollars in revenue," BusinessWeek reported.

The video below of Dana R. Wagner, Google's top in-house antitrust lawyer shows they are aware of their situation.

You have to give it to Google for not restricting its growth based on fear of antitrust actions but the groups they are challenging have gotten bigger and more conspicious.

The move into the analytics field may have been the start. It was a relatively new industry and one that had an obvious fit to the search engine. The fact that it saw the demise of many small companies could come back to haunt them.

The push in to publishing and the development of Google News initially was well received and many news organizations worked hard to get included. Unfortunately, the eventual backlash has created enemies with people who control the perception the public that could change its popularity. The Google Books move is another dangerous step. Obviously online book selling giants Amazon and Barnes and Noble see this as a possible challenge to their existence.

The purchase of Gizmo5 and the addition of it to Android to offer free GPS service could see the demise of TomTom and Garmin - previously the two major GPS companies. Actions like this can only add to the antitrust argument.

Their purchase of AdMob is another area that could get them flak. The purchase not only gives them a solid mobile ad platform but data about mobile platforms, in particular the iPhone. As Forbes notes: "With the acquisition of AdMob, Google now has access to usage data of many of the most popular mobile apps--especially the apps in the iTunes App Store... they just scored a huge competitive advantage. Google will know more details than ever about how people are using iPhone apps, how they are engaging with advertising within those apps, and users' loyalty to those apps."

Having Apple, Microsoft and News Corp looking to stop you may be taking on too many fronts at the same time - which history shows have brought about the defeat of many aggressors.

The other thing Google has to watch for is their own success. At some point, if they keep increasing their market share of search that could also lead to problems.

It is an interesting position Google finds themselves. Larry and Sergey could never have thought their Back Rub search engine would grow into this global conglomerate - loved by most people and feared by many major businesses.

Next article - How Would Google Be Chopped Up If Forced To DivestAussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-65095238342587669262009-08-08T07:57:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.361-07:00Charity Is Good Karma: Come Join Us At SES IM Chairity PartyOkay folks I know we have all been going through the pinch of the economy, but it is time to give to those even less fortunate. Putting out the usual Monday fires and gaining on my Promethean Rock. So thought a few minutes over at Twitter was earned.

But I wasn't there for more than two twits, when I checked my replies and was tagged by Harry (The Gypsy) David - bastard. Typical gypsy style - a meme - an electronic chain letter... worse than being rickrolled. So I have to list seven things you may not know about me - lol the hard part about this one is picking ones that will not need too much reputation management afterwards.

So here goes:

1. I have a signed picture of my brother and I with Robert Kennedy - a prized possession. My mother worked for him before he was shot and we met him a few times when we were over here from school in Australia.

2. I just erased one that can only be told in person - so ask me about that one next time you see me! (cheating a little so okay I have two kids 16 and 13)

3. I love cooking shows - but have never turned on the gas for my stove in my apartment. Silly really watching the Food Network and those reality cooking shows but never using any of the knowledge gained apart from looking for the items on menus when I am out.

4. I have played in two bands when I was younger that went on to get record deals after I left - does it mean I was that bad - I say because I just did not have the commitment to starve for my art.

5. I really want to be a playwright - but again the starving thing has always stopped me from pursuing too long.

6. I used to be one of the best porn film title writers around - sorta glad I got that Masters degree in Journalism! I had originally come to the US to work for Sports Illustrated - loved sports reporting but again you got all the good stories after hours at the bars and it was hard stretching the salary. So I moonlighted doing anything and everything.

7. I co-founded a newspaper in 1985 that is still being published today. We started it on an Apple 2 and the first laser printer - both of which I bartered from Alphagraphics in return for advertising in the paper. Loads of fun beta testing Aldus Pagemaker and selling advertising for half cash and half barter - food, drinks, clothing and even free office space.

So okay that is my things you now know. And I am suppose to tag seven other people - let's see who I can get to actually complete this.

1. Lauren (the future Mrs Kid Rock) Vaccarello
2. Todd (Stuntdubl) Mailicoat
3. Avi (Fire Boy) Wilenski
4. Chris (The Senator) Winfield
5. Pat (FeedtheBot) Sexton
6. Lisa (The Lisa) Barone
7. Did they jump out of the partnership, not to avoid the possibility of a legal battle, but because they had achieved what they wanted?

Let's go back to the Ringside scenario. "There are two dominant Social API's - the Facebook API and the OpenSocial API. The Ringside Social Application Server implements both API's so that a website or application can run their social application anywhere on the web. Additionally, the Ringside Server provides a way for websites to build their own friend networks that also integrate into the large Social Networks like MySpace, Orkut, hi5 and other OpenSocial-based Social Networks," as their website explains.

Google was interested in this application as it would have enabled them to compete with MySpace and Facebook. But they were fast also developing their own.

When Google approached Ringside they were about to get second round VC capital, which they turned down as they possibly were about to be acquired by Google. When Google stepped away from the offer the company ended up folding, unable to get funding they had turned down. Subsequently the company folded.

Interesting story in and of itself. Now let's think of this in terms of Yahoo.

Earlier this year, Microsoft made an earnest bid to acquire Yahoo and given Yahoo's financial situation they may have been forced to sell if they had not started the ad partnership with Google. Everyone watched the move and many started the cries of monopoly, but was this Google's distraction - the part of a masterful preconceived move to cripple Yahoo and deny Microsoft the chance to jump up to a real contender in the space?

I know it all sounds like a conspiracy theory but one that has some merit. Microsoft has pretty much given up on Yahoo and to a large extent the push to challenge Google in the search arena.

Jerry was made to look inept and will step down as Yahoo CEO. But, they did offer to fight the Sherman Act challenge - one I think could have been won. The partnership was not restricting advertisers access to Yahoo and the price at both are bid based so raising them would have been up to the actual advertisers not the company.

As Ringside CEO Bob Bickel details in his blog:

We were ready for our Series A round of funding, and in late May we received a number of term sheet offers from the very best VC firms. As we were about to finalize our funding, one of the biggest non-evil Internet companies asked if we would have interest in being acquired instead. After a lot of thought and debate, we decided that the larger company would enable us to get our technology to market sooner and with more impact.

The story sounds almost too good to be true. And it was. After dragging out the process for most of the summer, the non-evil company decided that they really did not want to acquire the company after all. Recommendation: always beware of wolves dressed as Grandma, they may be more like Microsoft than they admit.

Maybe he should have said the "no evil company" dislikes Microsoft more than they admit. We know Larry and Sergey are smart - but are they "evil geniuses"?AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-50499119152980534152008-09-02T16:05:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.379-07:00Well Looks Like SEOktoberfest For MeHow could anyone possibly pass up the chance to wear lederhosen and drink with some of the great SEMs at the Oktoberfest in Munich? He gladly offered to show us some local color. We met him in Travestere at the fountain at the piazza St. Marie - hope I got that close Massimo.

Now my kids are 16 and 13 and have traveled a bit and both were studying Italian, so this was a bonus 4 days on the way to Australia. My daughter loved the ancient ruins and churches, my 13 y-o son was mostly bored - no fights anymore at the Colosseum may have been a reason. So the side trip to an authentic neighborhood with a local would make for an interesting distraction.

I could not have asked for a better evening. We set out near his office and everywhere we stopped people knew and loved him. He gave the city the best spin and had my kids entertained with his stories. The daughter had some wine and water - as many Italians her age do at meals and we talked about the world that lay ahead for them.

After stops for aperitif and appetizers and then a great long dinner we walked a while and got them back to the hotel to get some sleep. Massimo and I had other plans.

He showed me his local - and by the greetings of so many old friends who see him about as much as those of us who do the search conference circuit - he is a loved character that everyone wanted to hear about his latest exploits. So we spent a couple of hours where he would not let me pay for a drink (after he bought dinner), introduced me to stunning and friendly models and all sorts of creative Romans.

Then the late night tour of the city began. On to his motorcyle, we went whipping through the mostly abandoned cobblestone streets and saw a side of Rome few tourists would be able to find on maps.

His love of the city showed and he knew all the cool places to see the city. Three spots with interior views of the Colosseum - little cul de sacs where the locals hung out. He even showed me an amazing sight at the Maltese Embassy (hope I got the right country Massimo) - but in this out of the way place with huge walls you walk up to a particular set of doors and there is a large peephole about the size of a silver dollar. You look in to the building and even though it was after midnight and dark, you had a view of Vatican - apparently the building is headquarters of the Knights of Malta - hidden away in Aventine hills where the richest houses in Rome are.

The midnight ride was a blast - cutting through restricted areas at the speed of sound - okay maybe a little slower but not much - hitting sharp turns and coming out on some great views of this fabulous city.

Massimo I had a blast and I will forever associate Rome with that great evening. See you at the next conference or maybe Burning Man. My kids will be talking about the conversations for quite a while.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-71935909689269613022008-07-17T08:12:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.382-07:00My 12 Year Old Could Teach Yahoo and Microsoft About Fair PlayI am in Cooperstown this week watching my 12 year-old son play in the Hall of Fame Baseball Tournament. His team is 7-0 and on their way later today to play in the championship game - go Green Dogs.

I have been more proud of his sportsmanship and sense of fair play, than I am of his athletic accomplishments. Maybe the executives over at Microsoft and Yahoo could hire him to instill a sense of maturity.

As a stockholder I have lost confidence in Jerry's kids, but the actions of Microsoft and Carl Icahn have not thrilled me either. This is big business and most investors expect a level of professionalism from the companies we invest in and from the people who control them.

One of the teams in my son's tournament have displayed unsportsmanlike conduct and not just the kids but the coaches and parents. What chance do the children have if they see the adults behaving that way. My son's team has been upbeat, supportive of one another and are enjoying their days in the sun. When an opposing player got injured and taken away in an ambulance they were concerned and made sure to find out how he was doing at the end of the day.

Regardless of how the Yahoo/Microsoft deal plays out, I think both parties have lost perspective. What type of example are you showing your employees and investors?

Obviously this isn't the kids playing field - but maybe it should be!AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-79579779663764144542008-07-02T23:18:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.384-07:00Google Really Is The BorgThe idea that Google will soon be in a position to substantially control what happens on the internet is not a fantasy. Given their collection of data, the advertisers and product sellers, the publishers and readers, are all ultimately under the influence of Google opinion.

Given their search reach, what they determine to be worth reading is soon the common view. People use the references to link to and lift those sites in the other search engines' results. While they may show differences the top 100 across most engines have a deep similarity.

We face the possibility that Google is Big Brother and in Orwellian fashion Google determines what is news speak.

The recent launch of the Google Affiliate Network possibly shows a little too much of that manipulation.

They tell Publishers:

Google Affiliate Network can help you discover new advertiser referral programs and generate more revenue.

Easy to use

Save time with an intuitive user interface, fast-loading pages, and creative trafficking tools.

Tracking and reporting

Track conversions and member IDs for loyalty marketing. Well they are supposed to be optimizing both sides.... but basically you put your companies in their hands. Fair exchange is no robbery - or this should be a win-win situation are cliches I expect to hear. But remember these are the guys who thought the Adwords minimum bids were a benefit to everyone - funny I seem to have helped finance all the work because I never saw a low CPC during that period.

Google seems ready to constantly be battling the government. Hey their lawyers are well trained by now.

To quote another Orwellian work: "All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others" and I guess Google gets to make that determination.

Just a heads up.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-55436313632544443582008-06-10T13:21:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.387-07:00If You Give A Mozz A SandwichI am hoping people are familiar with that classic "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" - if not it is a children's classic.

The recent post over at SEOMoz about XSS security was informative - well worth the sandwiches sent as payment by Search Engine Watch for the heads up.

So the story goes...

If you give a Mozz a sandwich he (or she) will probably want champagne to go with it.

Then after a bottle or two or three - they will most probably need to go to the bathroom.

When they get to the bathroom, they will probably notice that their eyes are bloodshot and want some Visine.

While they are waiting for you to get them the Visine, they will probably come up with some funny ideas for linkbait.

"Search Marketers With The Most Bloodshot Eyes At Conferences" will be created and deployed as another excellent blog entry.

People will get annoyed at their inebriation being plastered on the web, and a huge discourse will ensue on the Mozz blog. Sides will be drawn, links to the action will occur, but that just means more comments.

So when the traffic dies down and all the social networking is done they will be hungry and want more sandwiches.

Now if you happen to be used as the next reference - whatever you do - Do Not Give The Mozz A sandwich.... because......

Hope you guys liked the sandwiches Matt McGowan sent you last week. And Rebecca, Rand, Scott and Jane (figuring the order of who gets mad first)... I was joking and could not pass up the story... and I did not title it "If You Give A Moz A Cocktail" - that will be the sequel!

Darren I know you did not share in the sandwiches, but will buy you a drink when I see you at next conference.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8253762036868224219.post-3023033218585073682008-05-31T17:37:00.000-07:002010-07-25T08:50:01.388-07:00TechSet Coming To NYCWatch out New York City the TechSet is crashing Internet Week. Stephanie Agresta just let me know that her band of mischief makers will be attending various events.

Don't say I didn't warn you.AussieWebmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18350426689689515458noreply@blogger.com0
